5 things every Parent should know about their children's teeth!

It's pretty confusing to be a parent these days. There is so much information available about our children's health and sometimes things can seem very complicated. Here are answers to the 5 questions parents ask me most often about their children's teeth. Some of the answers may surprise you!

My daughter is 6 months old and doesn't have any baby teeth, is there something wrong? There is no right or wrong when it comes to when the first baby tooth comes in or what order they come in. Some children are born with a tooth and some are over one year of age when they get their first tooth. Kids will usually have all of their baby teeth by age 3. So don't lose any sleep about this one!

When should I bring Johnny in for his first dental appointment? Children should have a first dental appointment before age one. This allows us to check to make sure things are developing well (for example, is there a tongue tie that may interfere with feeding or speech development?, are there any early signs of decay?) At this stage, we can work together to focus our attention on prevention--How to look after your baby's teeth, when to introduce fluoridated water or toothpaste, when to stop night time milk feedings, when and what to give as snacks and the list continues...

What kind of water is best for teeth? Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral and has a protective effect on teeth. Spring water and filtered water may not have enough (or any!) fluoride to help in the fight against tooth decay. If you are drinking bottled water at home or are using an in home filtration system, double check to see the amount of fluoride that is actually in the water and discuss this with your dentist to see if there is any increased risk of cavities.

I noticed that my baby has started sucking his thumb, does that mean he will have crooked teeth? If your child uses a pacifier or sucks his/her thumb it doesn't necessarily mean that they will need braces. The key here is ensuring that these habits are eliminated by around 4 years of age. Your dentist will work with you to stop the habit by this age.

Baby teeth will fall out, so why bother treating them? Though they will eventually fall out, baby teeth are very important for proper nutrition, speech development, self-esteem, and for the development of permanent teeth to name a few! Speak with your dentist if you have any concerns about your children's teeth!

I decided to go ahead with the underarm laser hair removal procedure. One recommendation was to shave off the underarm hair the day before. Gloria and myself both had to wear goggles while the procedure is taking place to protect our eyes. Gloria put gel on my skin and then she started the laser treatment. It didn't hurt at all. It just felt like a ticklish feeling. It didn't burn or scar. With only 2 procedures done, I see the big effects already. I have less hair and its takes longer for it to grow back.

Repeated procedures are required every 6-8 weeks due the different phases of hair growth.

I am definitely going to book more sessions as I am happy with the results. I'm very impressed with the technology used and how safe it it. After several years of working in the corporate world as a business analyst, I found myself yearning to get back to what I loved most – teaching modelling.

With over 15 years of experience in the modelling, beauty and fashion industry, I have held many exciting roles including fashion show producer/choreographer, modelling school instructor, modelling agency assistant, makeup artist and editor of beauty and fashion columns for international magazines. I wanted to share my knowledge with young girls.

Catwalk Girls hosts unique and glamourous birthday parties, as well as exciting and educational workshops for group events. Girls ages 6+ participate in fun, informative and interactive sessions that can include a makeup application or lesson, runway modelling instruction, a photo session and a choreographed fashion show production. Always provide the best customer service. Return calls promptly! Customers always have a list of companies they will approach for your service. If you are not available or do not return calls quickly, they will move onto the next company. When you get the job, show up on time and be professional. It goes a long way and generates referrals that keep the business going!

7. How do you manage family life and work?
Catwalk Girls birthday parties and workshops take place on evenings and weekends. This allows my husband, who works a Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 job, to watch my son while I go to work.

8. Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Sending out a team of Catwalk instructors to multiple locations at the same time. Trusting the team to do the job, while I stay at home!

The two main reasons. With our first baby we quickly realized that shelf stable baby food doesn't taste very fresh, and with a little research realized that homemade was the best option. Second, we know how busy families are today - making your own can be time consuming, so we wanted
to provide a product and a service that improves the all around quality of family life. Convenience without the compromise!

4. What does your company do?
Mum's Kitchen delivers all natural and/or organic baby food to your doorstep. We have the added service of a staff Dietitian, Alice, who provides her advice and guidance with all our food combinations and standard packages. Sports Summer Camp Fun and Learning!

We are preparing a great Summer Camp Agenda! Kids will be learning a new sport everyday - Hockey, Soccer, Basketball, Baseball and Dodgeball. We now have Volleyball and Badminton which will be included in the daily activities. The interactive Sports Kiosks are full of excitement for the kids! They can score points and win tickets when they play in the batting, hockey, soccer, pitching and basketball cages. We also have gaming tables for more fun and learning - foosball, air hockey, soccer, pool and ping pong.

In addition, we have the Wii for interactive sports and dance along with other video games. There will also be Cinema time for the kids while they eat their lunch or snack.

All activities will be structured and supervised. There will not be a moment of boredom!

We have experienced and energetic staff, ready to "kick off" the summer program and organize exciting activities for the kids. The kids will have a FUNTASTIC time participating in all the fun and creative games and activities.

* Please note Summer Camp registrations are for ages 4-12 years.

3. Why did you start your company?

Great question. I didn't go into photography with the intent to launch a business. I began to take it seriously while I was still in the corporate world. As I would travel through Europe on my time off, I became fixated on capturing the places I was seeing, and capturing locals. I would find myself almost ignoring the tourist attractions and instead sitting on a bench at a rail station looking for interesting people to photograph around me. A defining moment happened 4 years ago when I photographed my Pastor's family. When I met with them after to show them the images, the mom cried. She cried alot. That moment changed everything. I suddenly realized that capturing the love that people have for one another and SHOWING them the love they have for one another...is powerful. Let's face it: we don't always "feel" love for those we love and images are a good reminder for us of our love and of our life, the very things we value more than anything else.

4. What does your company do?

I photograph people. Lots of people. Little people. Just-got-engaged people. Soul-mate people. Just-got-married people. Pregnant people. Workplace people.1 and 2 and 3 year old people (my favorites!!). Big groups of people. "I-hate-having-my-picture-taken" people. Newborn people.

I love to photograph people in natural light, in outdoor settings. Not having a studio allows me to be inventive and creative, especially when asked to do a session in a home. I have awesome clients who are always willing to move furniture around or roll up area rugs to maximize the 'good light' areas.

In addition to photography, I work with clients to create artwork for their home of their favorite images. Or, if they love them all, custom design albums they can pass down to their children to help remember and relive this season of their life.

5. What's the best thing about being your own boss?

I used to say it was working from home, but now I'm not so sure because my computer is never far from me. For a photographer, the work really begins once the shoot is over. Downloading, culling, sorting, editing, blogging, backing up, burning, uploading, slideshowing...I could obsess on this if I allowed myself to.

I think now the best part is having more flexibility to do the other things I love and that are important parts of my life. I'm very involved with my church and have always been involved in serving the homeless and the poor. I'm thankful to God for the opportunities to serve in these areas which I can do because He has blessed me with a successful business.

6. What advice can you give to entrepreneurs that are starting out?

There is so much to say!! I really wish I had found a mentor early on, I think it would have saved me alot of mistakes, headaches, time and money. So my first piece of advice is to find someone who you can connect with from time to time, someone who is willing to share their wisdom and their journey to help you with yours.

Advice #2: Be prepared to work hard. Very hard.

Advice #3: Don't be obsessed with making money. Be obsessed with doing good work. Good work = money.

7. How do you manage family life and work?

I don't have any children of my own, but there are lots of children in my life between my sister and my friends. I love them all as deeply as though they were my own. In fact I've realized that the reason I love child & family photography so much is because I am fascinated with families and how they make it work. From the outside, it looks so easy! (moms: it's ok to laugh right now)

Seriously though: Balance is important, time away from the computer and camera is important. The yard and gardens have become my escape and help me refresh. It's physical work and requires attentiveness so there isn't time to focus on other things. The fact that I'm a terrible gardener helps because everything is always in various stages of being unfinished.

In the winter I LOVE LOVE LOVE to bake. The problem though is that I love to take pictures of what I bake, and then, oops... I'm unbalanced again.

8. Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

Hmmm...I can't really envision that far down the future. I hope my life will have made an impact on some else's life, and that many more families will be able to relive today when they look at their images 10 years from now.
