Free Dental Screening for your Children

From Birth to the Tweens: Good Dental Health Means Good Overall Health.
From a completely dependent newborn to a ferociously independent teenager, our roles as parents change drastically as our children grow. And as a result, we are constantly looking for ways to learn and evolve to keep our families healthy. As a dentist I am always discussing the importance of oral health, but did you know there's a well-established link between dental health and overall health? Yes it's true - ailments such as diabetes, cardiovascular illnesses, and even premature and low birth-weight babies have all been linked to poor oral health. So looking after your teeth does more than just give you a nice smile, it helps to achieve optimal health.
As a mom with three children, I thought it would be helpful to focus on a few core issues at each stage of your child's dental development and how you can positively affect your children's health.
So here's the low down...
The Infant Years: clean your baby's gums and teeth with a wet wash cloth, infant toothbrush or baby tooth wipes after every meal or feeding. If you have difficulty finding these items, ask your dentist for some guidance. Never put your baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice and reserve Sippy cups for water only to reduce the risk of cavities.

The optimal time to take your child for their initial screening is before one year of age. It's a perfect opportunity to check for cavities and determine the overall oral development. The screening we provide at Dental Works on Cornwall is about 15 minutes long and it gives us the opportunity to inform you about your child's dental health. We can let you know about any issues we find.

From 2-10: I understand the apprehension that parents sometimes feel when the topic of fluoride comes up. Many are concerned because of the media attention that water fluoridation has received recently. However, many dentists largely credit the use of fluoride treatments and fluoridated water with the drastic decline in tooth decay. Fluoride is naturally occurring and is found in well water in many communities. Once fluoride enters your mouth, it gets diluted in saliva. It then binds to the bacterial plaque stuck on your teeth and helps to protect your teeth by inhibiting bacterial growth and deterring tooth decay. However, if as a family you decide to eliminate fluoride from your drinking water, you need to be extra vigilant in the care of your children's teeth due to the increased risk of decay. Brushing twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste, flossing daily and avoiding sugary foods becomes essential to prevent decay, and sometimes, despite taking all these measures, cavities may still develop. As parents, we should start using a slight smear of fluoridated toothpaste at around age 2 and by 10 our children should be using a pea sized amount. No one needs a toothbrush overflowing with toothpaste, not even adults!

Tweens and Beyond: Make sure your son/daughter is using a mouth guard for any sport where there's a risk of dental trauma. By this time, most of the adult teeth are in and any developing bite problems can be identified. An orthodontic screening should be part of every dental check-up, but ask if you're concerned about the alignment of your child's teeth. Many children become more independent at this age which means you can't always know what they're eating, and you definitely can't make them brush and floss. Try an electric toothbrush and a fluoride mouth rinse and you will better your odds at preventing cavities.
Did you know that prevention is the most effective way to minimize extensive dental treatment for us all? As much as I love seeing my clients, making small changes TODAY can help keep your child's dental appointments to a minimum.

Ask Dr. Piracha any questions you may have. She will also offer a COMPLIMENTARY oral screening for your child and provide one-on-one information on proper oral hygiene, discuss your child's dental health and advise you of any issues she may have found. We'll have coffee brewing for the parents while we chat and there will be healthy snacks, a colouring station as well as stickers for any older siblings that may come along.

Occasionally, one can see "For Sale By Owner" signs, and some owners think that selling their own home will not only save them money, but believe they have an advantage over the sellers that have their home listed by a reputable Real Estate sales professional. Before you decide to take on this very important and legally complicated process…remember not even most Real Estate Lawyer's recommend selling your own home yourself in today's market. Here are a few of the reasons why:

1. You are limiting your exposure to potential buyers (less than 10% of what a good real estate broker will generate) which theoretically means your home will take ten to fifteen times longer to sell on the market.
2. The longer a home is on the market the lower the selling price is. Why? Because most buyers think that if the home has not sold after this long... there must be something wrong with the home.
3. The selling/buying process begins AFTER the buyer leaves your home. Most sellers think that all it takes is for someone to see their home, fall in love with the great decor... and the offer automatically will follow. Remember that the buying process begins after they leave your home. If a real estate sales representative does not represent the buyer, and they are looking on their own…they usually leave the home and start to talk themselves out of the buying process. Real estate professionals are trained on how to overcome buyers remorse--a very common occurrence.
4. Because of the limited exposure you will very likely end up with a lower selling price. Remember, in order to generate the highest price possible for your home… selling means exposure. You need the maximum exposure possible, to generate the highest price possible.
5. Most buyers find it extremely awkward to negotiate or even to talk directly with sellers and therefore avoid FSBO properties.
6. Lack of negotiating experience and lack of pertinent information often will result in a lower selling price, or worse yet, a bungled contract and possible lawsuits.
7. The majority of qualified buyers are working with experienced real estate professionals.
8. Many serious buyers will pass by a FSBO home merely because they recognize that it is not in the real estate mainstream, this can some times make them wary.
9. As most local buyers now retain an experienced real estate sales person to represent them as their buyer-agency, you will probably be negotiating against an experienced professional.
10. Expected savings in broker's fees will also be greatly reduced if you offer a selling commission to entice real estate sales representatives to bring potential buyers.
11. If you are planning to use a Lawyer to help you negotiate the offer, then your lawyer's fees will be considerably higher.
12. Only real estate sales representatives have access to the up-to-date market information. News reports cannot approach the timeliness or specificity available to real estate sales people. Further, real estate sales representatives are involved in home sales much more frequently than the average homeowner is. This familiarity leads to a degree of expertise that provides an edge on negotiating and successful selling.
13. You only pay the commission to the real estate broker, if they successfully sell your home at the price you are happy with.
14. Accepting an offer is one thing, ensuring a safe and successful closing is quite another. Real estate transactions usually always have problems on closing. At times, expecting the Buyers and Sellers Lawyer's to fight it out or resolve the problems, can sometimes mean the deal is lost. This is the time that your experienced real estate professional, can be the most important. Your Real Estate professional can act as a great mediator. Lawyers MUST act only on their client's instructions and are not paid to negotiate.

2012 Maple Syrup Festival at Bronte Creek
You're invited to Bronte Creek's Annual Maple Syrup Festival
Fresh Ontario maple syrup begins flowing at Bronte Creek Provincial Park on the first Saturday in March when the park's annual Maple Syrup Festival gets under way. The maple syrup festivities are open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. every weekend in March and from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily through March Break.

Enjoy a guided tour of the Maple Lane, where 1890s costumed interpreters demonstrate how to tap maple trees, make maple syrup and maple sugar. View artifacts in the maple museum or tour the 100-year-old Spruce Lane Farmhouse. Be sure to browse through the maple products and souvenirs available in the Maple Gift Shoppe and pick up a bottle of syrup to take home. Hop on a wagon that will take you to a heated pancake house where you can enjoy fresh, hot pancakes with pure maple syrup and sausages, served up throughout the festival hours.

Three changes you should make today to keep the dentist away!

Quick tips to keep your kids cavity-free.


As a dentist with three small children of my own, I understand the anxiety that children (and their parents) may have when visiting their dentist. And quite often I find myself in a situation where I need to tell loving parents that their young child has cavities. Many are shocked because they thought they were being really careful about what their kids are eating.

Everybody knows that too much candy can cause cavities. Although that's true, I wish it was that simple with candy being the only culprit. Exposure to simple sugars definitely increases the risk of dental decay, but the story doesn't end there. There are numerous factors that contribute to the formation of cavities and even snacks that you thought were healthy, could be harming your children's teeth.

Did you know that prevention is the most effective way to minimize extensive dental treatment for us all? As much as I love seeing my clients, here are 3 changes you can make TODAY to help keep your child's dental appointments to a minimum.

It's okay to let your kids indulge in the occasional treat...but only at the end of a meal! This is when salivary flow is the highest and so it's the safest time for a sweet treat. Sugary foods (like dried fruit, candies or juices) or starchy foods (like crackers, pasta or pretzels) will increase your child's risk of getting cavities when eaten as between meal snacks. Cheese, on the other hand, is a healthy snack and tooth-friendly too!


As soon as your child gets his first tooth, STOP nursing him to sleep or putting him to bed with a bottle of milk, formula or juice. These can all result in severe decay which may then require extensive treatment even in very young children. To prevent this, clean your baby's teeth with a wet washcloth, a tooth cleansing wipe (available at some dental offices) or a small soft toothbrush moistened with water before bed. And if necessary put your child to sleep with a bottle of water or a pacifier.

And finally, start looking after your own teeth. Babies are born without any cavity causing bacteria. They inherit these "sugar bugs" from their parents and caregivers through shared food, utensils, toothbrushes and even kisses. So, by looking after your own teeth, you're not only minimizing the transfer of these pesky sugar bugs, but you're also modeling behaviour that your kids will want to mimic. A win/win situation!
Parents want the best for their children. Making these simple changes will have a positive effect on your children's teeth and their health. Also, one visit to the dentist before one year of age will get your child on track to zero cavities! For example, your child's first visit at Dental Works on Cornwall is usually no more than a quick 15 minute appointment. It's also an opportunity for both you and your child get comfortable with us and the environment. We will screen your child's teeth and gums for any developing issues and discuss what preventive measures would help your child stay cavity free!

For the last 6 years I have passionately been working as a Staging Professional. Thinking this service would complement my Interior design services; I took an accreditation course with The Canadian Staging Professionals. Since then I have watch this side of my business grow at a very steady and demanding rate.

What is staging and does it work? Staging is literally putting your house and home on a stage. Putting your house on a show; where a desirable life style is displayed, for potential buyers to see and wish for.
We want to show something that will make an unforgettable “First Impression” so that they can see themselves as being part of this exciting show.

The stage must be set free of whatever is going to distract the potential buyer’s attention from appreciating the architectural features of the home, the space available and its potential.

This is why de-cluttering is so important, especially of family portraits, toys, ornaments, plants and anything that it is going to give a negative impression.

De-cluttering also applies to furniture. Oversized furniture that is blocking and entrance, a window or doors, will only tell a buyer that the place is too small.
It’s important also to show each room as its intended purpose. For example finding a dining room used as an office space; will rob a buyer of an image of a family dinner party.

Lighting is also a very important. Letting as much light into the house will make it feel spacious and give a sense of wellbeing. Artificial lighting is just as important, especially for night showings; good lighting will create a cozy atmosphere that will say I can relax in this room after a long’s day at work!”

Master bedrooms are another important selling feature in today’s market. Buyer’s busy life styles

have created the need for a master bedroom that offers a “retreat” were they can relax and enjoy before going to sleep. Making a bedroom attractive, relaxing with a touch luxury is a must!

Has your child expressed an interest in music and taking music lessons? Are you interested in learning more about lessons, practise strategies, and how to make the most of your child’s musical studies? The Oakville School of Music & Performing Arts welcomes students to the school for a free trial lesson that will get you on the right foot in your musical journey.

The school offers private lessons on a variety of instruments including piano, guitar, violin, voice, and flute from ages 4 to adult. Students at the school are given opportunity to practice their skills in a variety of settings apart from their individual studies including end of year concerts and community performances. Currently the school is the official anthem provider for the Oakville Blades Hockey team, where voice students are able to perform in a professional setting on a weekly basis.

This March Break the school is excited to offer its unique Piano Fingers Mini Camp – as a March Break Edition! The camp is stepping stone towards private music lessons, and is an introductory piano camp, where campers learn the basics of piano & music notation as a group. The camp will also
include singing, movement, and rhythm exercises that make learning music fun.

The camp is designed for children ages 4 to 6 years of age, each session has a limited number of spots due to the nature of the programming. You may register for the camp online, or by calling the school to reserve a spot.
