Mildred's-Lightbourn School's Preschool

Did you know that St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School's Preschool is a very busy place? From the moment the girls arrive, their learning begins! Research indicates that in a single-gender classroom, even as early as Preschool, girls show more confidence, participate fully in class, eagerly tackle problems, and express ideas. To augment learning, our classrooms are resourced with a variety of hands-on material and state-of-the-art technology. Wouldn't you want your daughter to start off her educational journey here?

SMLS is a premier independent all-girls' school in the heart of Olde Oakville, from Preschool to Graduating Year. With a 125 year history, St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School's mission is to develop courageous girls who challenge and change the world. Our faculty are experts in the education of girls and young women, and proudly foster their intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual development in an environment that offers challenge and instills confidence.

Come and see for yourself what an SMLS education means for your daughter. Please contact our Admissions Department at 905.845.5830 ext. 814 or awilliamson@smls.on.ca . We look forward to welcoming your family to ours!

Oakville Eye Care

Oakville Eye Care

Our practice is dedicated to helping our patients achieve a lifetime of healthy vision by providing each patient with the highest quality eye care. Our optometrists, Drs. Yeung, Angra and Koh have a strong focus on family centered eye care, including extensive experience in pediatric eye examinations.

The current guidelines recommend the first eye examinations for children at age of 6 months, the second examination at age 3 years, and then yearly there after.

Do you know how well your child can see? It isn't always obvious to a child or a parent. Have your child's vision checked and know for sure. Good vision is an important part of learning...

• 80% of classroom learning is done through the eyes
• 1 in 6 children have some form of vision problem
• Children with poor vision often find it difficult to focus on their work and may be misdiagnosed as having a learning or behavioural disability
• Good vision is vital to developing skills such as reading, copying and hand eye coordination

How will my baby or child be tested if they are non-verbal or cannot sit still?

Babies and young children don't have to know the alphabet or even speak to have their vision tested by an optometrist. Many vision tests use pictures or symbols familiar to preschoolers, and children can respond by naming, matching or pointing. Other tests are done objectively, so young children don't have to be able to communicate well to be evaluated. We also use toys, videos and our clinical experience to keep your child's attention during the examination! My child already had a vision screening at school and passed. What is the difference between a comprehensive eye examination and vision screening? Vision screenings are usually performed by technicians or nurses and involve only one or two tests and cannot detect all problems - up to 40% of children with vision problems can pass a vision screening.

A comprehensive eye examination by your Doctor of Optometry includes medical history, visual acuity, eye muscle co-ordination, colour vision, depth perception, testing for a prescription and an ocular health assessment.

What is the process of booking an eye examination for my child?

OHIP covers one full eye examination annually for all children aged 19 years and under. This means that there is no out-of-pocket cost for the eye exam with a valid OHIP card. In addition, there is a program called EYE SEE EYE LEARN by the Government of Ontario to raise awareness among parents of the importance of having their children's eyes checked upon starting school.

Junior Kindergarten (born 2011) children enrolled or living in publicly funded School Districts, including Halton and Peel, are able to participate in the Eye See Eye Learn program for the 2015/2016 school year.

Participating children of 2011 birth year who require a pair of glasses will receive one pair FREE OF CHARGE courtesy of our participating industry sponsors Nikon Lenswear and OGI Eyewear. The frames are fashionable and are made with high quality and impact resistant polycarbonate lenses. They are covered under a full two year or two time manufacturer's warranty against defect.

Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control

Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control has been helping Oakville residents keep their homes free of nuisance wildlife since 1989. Our hands-on techniques and humane methods are animal and family safe and are endorsed by the Town of Oakville and the Oakville & Milton Humane Society. Oakville is home to large and diverse populations of wildlife that have adapted their behaviour to thrive in urban settings. Wild animals in cities rely on houses and structures for shelter which inevitably puts them into conflict with humans. We know that dealing with uninvited animal visitors can be both frustrating and stressful for homeowners. With the potential for thousands of dollars of damage, it’s nice to know that there are professionals out there who can handle the situation from start to finish. Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control humanely removes and excludes: raccoons, skunks, squirrels, birds, bats, mice and more! Skedaddle’s Proven Three Step Process Assess and Remove Our process begins by performing a thorough inspection of your home and property to determine the species involved and how they are coming and going. We then implement a customized removal plan based on wildlife biology and your home’s unique construction. Clear and Clean When wild animals decide to take up residence inside your home they can cause tremendous amounts of damage and reduce property values. Our technicians are trained to remove harmful feces and nesting material as well repair soiled attic insulation and building materials. Prevent and Protect The final step in our process involves permanently sealing and securing the entry points. With so much wildlife in our neighbourhoods it’s important to make sure your home is protected against future intrusions.   Trust the Professionals With winter around the corner wildlife are looking for cozy places to hunker down and get out of the cold. Now is the time to make sure your home is protected against critters. Skedaddle offers superior service backed by over two decades of experience and our workmanship and materials come with a lifetime guarantee. If scurrying, scratching and scampering are keeping you up at night then be sure to call Skedaddle today - 905-858-3379! Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control www.skedaddlewildlife.com

The Annex Dance Academy is celebrating their 10th anniversary!   Children build knowledge and skills through continuous and evolving processes of instruction. Our program for our youngest dancers is organized in this evolving form allowing for children to actively build new learning and understanding. We work at keeping class interesting by utilizing music, props and storytelling. We sing and dance songs that children already know and love while learning new songs to perform for one another. In addition to Dance technique, we work on social and emotional goals, such as the feeling of accomplishment and pride a young dancer gets when mastering new or challenging technique. We guide our young dancers with life skills such as waiting a turn in class or partnering in song and dance.
